~ Canada's Minister of Immigration and Citizenship seems to be well-liked by the Filipino community as evidenced by the warm welcome and huge turnout at an informal, early evening dinner of Filipino food. Jason Kenney spent more than an hour talking, socializing and sharing meals with Filipinos right after he spoke to a big congregation of churchgoers about his meeting with President Noynoy Aquino in Manila in mid-September. To him, Aquino is the "only hope" to bring prosperity and stability to the Philippines.

JASON KENNEY IS BACK FROM A VISIT IN MANILA
Canada's Immigration Minister Says Aquino is RP's 'Only Hope'

By ROMEO P. MARQUEZ

TORONTO - Fresh from a trip to the Philippines, Canada's Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said President Noynoy Aquino seems to be the "only hope" for the country to take off and stay secure and stable amidst what he called "deep economic and social challenges".

The minister had visited Manila on a four-nation swing that included stops in Paris, New Delhi, Hongkong and Beijing. The visits centered on issues such as illegal immigration, human trafficking and smuggling, border security and resettlement of refugees.

Kenney said that after meeting and talking with Aquino on Sept. 17 at the presidential Malacanang Palace, it struck him that the President was "a man of sincerity, intelligence and ability".

The statement drew applause from the predominantly Filipino churchgoers who filled the Our Lady of Assumption church on Bathurst St. in north Toronto for the 5 p.m. Mass on Sunday (Sept. 26, 2010).

A film clip of the event is available at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEfRlPSZ5nE&feature=channel

"President Aquino seems authentic, he's someone who has the right orientation, someone who's working for good faith, and not out to enrich himself but to enrich the people of his country," Kenney stated.

His emphasis on Aquino not enriching himself received warm ovation and mild cheering, evidence that he had touched the hearts and minds of Filipinos who are toiling hard in Canada to sustain their families in the Philippines but are frustrated with rampant corruption there.

Kenney had only good words for Aquino and the Filipinos, specially those who are presently in Canada as doctors, nurses, ITs, caregivers and the like.

He thanked Filipino-Canadians for their contributions and for taking the courage to immigrate to Canada. "Canada has been enriched by the special gifts brought to it by the people of the Philippines".

"No one is perfect. He (Aquino) is going to have challenges -- deep economic and social challenges," the minister stressed.

After he spoke to the congregation, Kenney joined officials and the caregiving community in an early evening dinner of Filipino food. He obliged every single person in the church auditorium for a picture-taking with him.

Earlier on, Kenney briefly attended the Mass and took communion. News footage at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4dyq76n0q4&feature=channel

~ While Filipinos pay little attention to the dishonor of having the busts of national hero Jose Rizal in fishmarkets in San Diego and Los Angeles, California, the Toronto Police Service paid tribute to his role in Philippine history by having the image of his monument in Manila's Luneta Park painted in a huge Community Quilt of Tiles to highlight the strength and diversity of Canada's largest city. The painting of the Rizal monument, according to Philippine Consul General Minerva Falcon, "encapsulates the entirety of what we are about in the Philippines".

TORONTO - An artist's rendering of the Jose Rizal monument in Manila's Luneta Park is among the iconic landmarks that occupies a spot in a huge Community Quilt of Tiles adorning the Toronto Police College building shown on Saturday (Sept. 25, 2010) to Asia Pacific community leaders and the Filipino media.

The city's police department honored some of the artists, including Frank A. Cruzet, a self-taught painter who was a former Manila policeman himself. He had painted a white tile with images of the Rizal monument based on a photograph furnished by Toronto Police Constable Philip Mendoza.

Cruzet said it was Mendoza's idea to have something that symbolizes the Philippines and is easily recognizable by all Filipinos. That tile is one of 35 other tiles that formed the big Community Quilt of Tiles to highlight Toronto's policing commitment to the Asian Pacific communities.

Staff Superintendent Jane Wilcox led officials in honoring the artists with symbolic plaques. (A video presentation is available at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bADykG7Ijc&feature=channel ).

Philippine Consul General Minerva Falcon, who was among the honored guests, said she was elated that the Rizal monument was chosen, quite fittingly, as it "encapsulates the entirety of what we are about in the Philippines".

"I am very, very pleased that the theme chosen for this sums up the experience of the Filipino both historically and their experience here in Canada," Falcon stressed.

The quilt as an art form was the idea of Inspector Cory Bockus to emphasize the contributions of Toronto's diverse communities."By joining these images together, we reveal the strength and beauty of Toronto," according to her published statement.

Toronto,Canada's largest city, is the most diverse in North America. It also has the biggest concentration of Filipinos.

~ Hardly has the news gone out last night of an appointment by President Obama of a Filipino American community leader than a protest is being registered on Friday, less than 24 hours after the White House made the announcement. The financial woes and suspected wrongdoings at the moribund National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) are now being dragged into the open as Las Vegas, Nevada-based Rozita V. Lee got named member of a presidential advisory commission in Washington, D.C. The White House has set the swearing-in of Lee and 17 others on Tuesday at the US Capitol.

NAFFAA A 'CORRUPT ORGANIZATION,' SAYS JOURNALIST
Financial Ills in NaFFAA Outshine Appointment of Fil-Am Community Leader

By ROMEO P. MARQUEZ

TORONTO - A Los Angeles-based Filipino journalist on Friday (Sept. 17, 2010) protested US President Barack Obama's appointment of a Filipino-American community leader to an advisory post less than 24 hours after the White House made the announcement.

Bobby Reyes, editor and publisher of the online MabuhayRadio.com, asked the White House to continue with its vetting process on Rozita V. Lee, the current national vice chair of the moribund National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA), who was named a member of the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

In Washington, meanwhile, the White House Media Affairs Office disclosed Friday that Ms. Lee and others will be sworn in at the US Capitol on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010.

Reyes said NaFFAA was "a corrupt organization, which could be prosecuted for criminal violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act". (Related story at: http://timecircumstance.blogspot.com/2010/09/is-naffaa-already-dead-or-still-dying.html

It's not clear if Reyes wanted the White House to recall the appointment or rescind it altogether. Ms. Lee was not immediately available for comment and neither were officials of NaFFAA.

"Our main objection to the appointment of Ms. Rozita Lee is based on her membership in the ruling clique that has been running, and that continues to run, the National Federation of Filipino-American Associations (NaFFAA)," Reyes said in a letter to President Obama and coursed through Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

"Ms. Rozita Lee is the NaFFAA’s national vice chairperson since 2006. We have been publishing reports x x x about the NaFFAA being a corrupt organization, which could be prosecuted for criminal violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act," Reyes explained.

NaFFAA trumpets itself as the "Voice of Filipinos and Filipino Americans throughout the United States" though it is no more than an advocacy and lobby group for the varied interests of its national officials. It also claims to have "more than five hundred Filipino-American institutions and umbrella organizations" in 12 regions all over the US.

Reyes said that published articles had accused Ms. Lee "of issuing NaFFAA checks with her sole signature in violation of the NaFFAA bylaws’ requirement of two signatures".

"We will be filing also against the same NaFFAA clique members, including Ms. Rozita Lee, complaints for tax evasion with the Criminal Prosecution Division of the Internal Revenue Service," according to Reyes, and provide the Office of the President with a copy of the complaints by next week.

Reyes said Ms. Lee should have informed the White House that she would be one of the respondents in the complaint that he was set to file with the Department of Justice for what he claims was the NaFFAA officials' violation of the RICO Act.

Ms. Lee was one of 18 individuals appointed to key administration posts. "Our nation will be well-served by the skill and dedication these men and women bring to their new roles. I look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead,” President Obama said in an earlier statement.

~ "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," according to Plato. Or, the lack of it. A bit actor's strip act during a family-oriented festival is generating a backlash from the Toronto Filipino community. One group feels particularly offended, calling it "uncalled for" and "very offensive". The woman president of the sponsoring organization appears okay with it. But more than that, however, the presence of Katrina Halili as headliner for the show is bound to raise more questions because of her controversial sex caper with ertswhile lover Hayden Kho that millions saw in the internet. If the festival held in July was for family and the youth looking for role models, why was Katrina Halili and stripteaser Wendell Ramos allowed to lead it?

A BESTIAL FESTIVAL?
Strip Act at Toronto's Mabuhay Feast Draws
Condemnation; Katrina Halili Was Headliner

By ROMEO P. MARQUEZ

TORONTO - With an estimated turnout of 14,000 people, the Mabuhay Festival & Trade Show in July must have scored big for its main organizer, the Philippine Independence Day Council (PIDC), a non-profit umbrella organization with a claimed membership of "almost 300" Filipino-Canadian provincial, regional, professional, cultural and social groups in Toronto.

But while success may take the form of expanded pockets and newfound pride among its officers, its basic goal to foster unity within the community "by showcasing the best of Philippine, arts, culture . . ." may have suffered a setback.

Certainly, the likes of burlesque entertainer Katrina Halili and her cohorts at the show don't come up to being "the best" -- unless the bar has been lowered to accommodate the many voyeurs who wanted to see raw flesh than propagate culture.

That evening Katrina was all wrapped from neck to thigh, her blue dress revealing her body's magnificent contours that drive men like her ertswhile lover Hayden Kho into convulsion and fits of insanity.

PIDC president Minda Neri (Photo image copied
from Philippine Reporter website)
Her signature romp with Kho in a Manila motel bed was her one defining act, watched by millions in the internet, and the image staying forever in everyone's mind and burned into CDs for posterity.

The circus that followed, from a police station to a Manila courtroom to the august chambers of the Philippine Senate, had not weakened the interest in Katrina even as she wailed like an abused child as her defenders made it appear. But of course, she is an adult prone to experience occasional hormone surges which could at times be uncontrollable.

Before the bed frolic with Kho, Katrina was nowhere near being "the best". She sexy-danced in dimly-lit clubs in revealing two-piece bikinis, lip-synching songs, teasing customers with her luscious smile, gyrating to tunes one can only find in red-light districts.

Meanwhile, the women crowd at the Mabuhay Festival had an instant epiphany of their own sexuality, thanks to bit-actor Wendell Ramos, who with Katrina and four others provided some comic relief, a bit of entertainment and lots of disappointments.

I half-believe the witnesses' accounts told by colleagues who stayed much longer than I did at the convention centre for the show.

The crowd was roaring wild, according to them, yelling "hubad, hubad" for Ramos to disrobe. As the shouting got louder and the pressure mounted, the actor happily obliged and removed his shirt.

"It elicited shrieks from the female crowd," was how Balita columnist Tenny Soriano put it, which was a bit of an understatement.

"The women were particularly fired up about meeting Wendell and were not disappointed during the show when he took off his shirt much to the delight of many screaming fans," wrote Karen P. Binaday in the August 2010 issue of Filipino Bulletin, a Toronto tabloid.

"The men, on the other hand, were there to see Katrina in the flesh," the writer continued, adding that "she too had a following that included fellas who braved painful ailments just to stand in line to watch her."

Clearly, much against what it had advertised, the festival wasn't so much about arts or heritage as it was about purveying sex. Sex in various disguises.

Poster announcing the festival.
One group, the Advocacy for Christian Living, decried Ramos' strip act as "very offensive," "distasteful" and "inappropriate".

"This was supposed to be a family festival," ACL's Elena Grutco wrote to this reporter. "It was going fine until one of the artists took off his shirt to expose his body. This act was uncalled for."

"The family festival turned into a rowdy festival and some of the kids were covering their eyes and some of our senior members left in disgust," Grutco said in her signed letter.

According to her, she talked with PIDC president Minda Neri and complained. "She said that 'there is nothing wrong of (sic) what he did' and apparently she approved of this show," Grutco stressed.

Neri and other PIDC officials had not responded to questions by this reporter sent by email more than a month ago.

One of the questions was why, of all people, Katrina Halili was chosen to lead the festival as if she's the embodiment of a compleat Filipina that many Filipino youth in Toronto look for.

"Knowing Katrina and how notorious she has become, no right-thinking organization would dare promote her as some kind of a role model for modern Filipinas," said a Filipino caregivers' advocate who asked not to be identified.

Apparently, PIDC had an arrangement with the Manila-based GMA network, with the latter acting as "presenting sponsors" of the festival.

From what can be gathered from interviews, it appears that PIDC had no say in what GMA dumps on them. The network is out to promote its shows and the talents in its stable through community festivals such as the Mabuhay Festival where it embeds them.

"The true measure of an organization comes from the success of the events it leads. This is true with the PIDC 2010 events," boasted PIDC's Ben Cruz in a press release listing the many activities that PIDC led since March and ending with a dance contest in October.

According to Cruz, PIDC president Minda Neri said "she‘s delighted in the knowledge that the various activities of PIDC enjoys strong support and patronage from the different segments in the community. This inspires the members and officers to work even harder to meet and deliver the expectations of the community and its charitable beneficiaries."
