By ROMEO P. MARQUEZ
TORONTO - US President Barack Obama called the newly-proclaimed Benigno Aquino III on Wednesday morning and congratulated him on his election as President of the Philippines.
The two presidents agreed "to meeting at a mutually convenient time," and to upgrade the present relationship to a new level, the White House said.
The White House said the two leaders talked and briefly discussed issues of mutual interests, including "strong cooperation on security and economic issues in the Asia Pacific region and globally."
"The (US) President described the May 10 elections as a model of transparency and positive testament to the strength and vitality of democracy in the Philippines," according to a White House statement released to the Philippine Village Voice on Wednesday by the Office of the Press Secretary.
Mr. Obama, the White House said, "noted the deep historic and people-to-people ties between the United States and the Philippines" which was the first and only colony of the US at the turn of the 19th century.
"The Philippines is a long time ally and close friend of the United States," the US president stressed.
